Our story
In 2022, amidst a challenging social and economic situation in Uganda, Plamena Bogdanova and Ssali Joseph decided to take a leap of faith. As volunteers, we had witnessed too many injustices, and too many children were left without food, shelter, or education. We wanted to change that. But not just with good intentions—we wanted to build something real, transparent, and truly dedicated to children. And so, our foundation was born.
At first, we had no idea how we were going to make it work. We had big dreams but no magic wand. What we did have was determination (and a fair share of sleepless nights). Fast forward three years, and we have a fully functioning orphanage that provides a safe home for 22 children. They attend school, where they learn life skills, including dancing, cooking, braiding, leadership training—you name it! We even got our own school bus (which, trust us, was a game-changer) and recently acquired land to grow our own food. Sustainable future, here we come!
Where it all begins
Early 2022
The first idea of the foundation was born from the belief that every child deserves safety, care and chance to grow in real home.
Turning vision into action
Second half of 2022
Khule Charity Foundation was officially established. What began as an intention to help, became a commited promise to build something lasting for children in need.
Building a place to belong
May, 2023
We purchased and began renovating the house for the children, not simply as a building, but as a place where they could feel secure, seen and loved.
A house became a home
June, 2023
The children moved in and from that moment on the house became more than walls and rooms. It became a home, filled with everyday care, comfort and hope.
Investing in a sustainable future
2024
We purchased cultivable land, taking another meaningful step toward the foundation's sustainability and long-term independence.
Registered as an NGO
April, 2025
The foundation received its NGO certification, making an important step in the growth of our mission.
Our Team
Plamena
Founder
Originally from Bulgaria, she’s dreamed of volunteering in Africa since she was little. It turns out, dreams do come true - just with a lot more hard work than she expected!
Joseph Ssali
Founder
He grew up in an orphanage in Uganda and has seen more injustices than anyone should. But despite it all, he has the biggest heart and a relentless drive to help children in need.
Esther Nasozi - Mama
Heart of our house
The glue that holds us all together. Mama doesn’t just run the household; she provides the maternal warmth and stability that every child needs to feel safe. Whether she’s healing a scraped knee or stirring a giant pot of food, her love is the foundation of our home.

Patrick is a bridge between our home and the wider community. He is the driving force behind our special collaborations and events, ensuring our children have the chance to connect, grow, and share their joy with the world.
